How to make easter fun for kids without chocolate

If you have younger kids, you might be wondering how to celebrate Easter and make it fun for them without getting them full of chocolate. Sure, chocolate is delicious, but in our family, we decided to postpone the sugar overload as much as possible. Our daughter is 3.5 now so she does eat sugar. But we try not to make it a habit nor  the star of parties and celebrations for her.

So, with that in mind, I wanted to share some ideas of how to celebrate this very chocolate-centric day with your kids without making it all about chocolate. Check it out!

EGGS

There are SO MANY fun activities to do with eggs, be them real or plastic. You’ll find a variety of cheap fake eggs at any Dollar store or get a huge pack at Amazon like this one.

Sensory bins

Kids love getting their kids dirty and touching things. That’s a fact. You can do a sensory bin with water and bubbles or colored rice. Just throw some eggs in there and give them some tools to dig them up. To make it even more fun, put little toys inside each egg. Toys are always a good substitute for candy with the big plus of lasting longer. Stickers are a good option too. Look at these bins by Twin Mom Refreshed.

Egg hunt

The Easter egg hunt is the classic activity but here are some ideas to amp it up a notch and make it EPIC!

Make big bunny feet that they have to wear while hunting for eggs. It’s a guarantee of big laughs!
Put in glow sticks inside the plastic eggs and have a hunt after dark. It’s a twist and kids love twists.
If it’s too cold to go out, do an Easter Punch instead of a hunt. Kids love punching stuff, am I right?
Prepare a scavenger hunt with a big price at the end. Each egg has clues about where the next egg is.
For kids who like puzzles, hide one piece of a puzzle in each egg so they have the motivation to find them all. You can also combine this one with the scavenger hunt and put in clues to where the next piece is.
For egg filler ideas, I loved this one from Andrea’s Notebook. Why not turn fun family trips into prizes? Check out her blog post for more non-candy filler ideas.

BUNNIES

Another super cute symbol of Easter are bunnies. If you have an animal loving kid, why not make a bunny-inspired celebration. Here are some ideas:

This is so simple and cute. Party with Unicorns has free printables to make it even easier.
For kids who enjoy crafting, these sock bunnies are super cute and it’s something they get to keep for a long time.
Super easy to do, even younger toddler can participate in making these paper plate bunnies.
Leverage the bunny shape and cut healthy snacks into bunnies!

CARROTS

Why not take the opportunity to talk about carrots? That’s what bunnies eat, right?

These bubble wands turned into carrots are so adorable and we all know kids love bubbles.
I LOVED this idea! Do a carrot hunt instead of an egg hunt. That gets kids touching and manipulating real carrots, you can talk about how they grow and actually eat them afterwards.
And to end on a sweet note, you can make these healthy carrot smoothies together! Yum!!
