Popcorn Bar 101

Whether you’re hosting a movie night, or just gathering friends for cocktails, putting together a popcorn bar is always a good idea. It’s super practical and everybody likes popcorn. Let’s take a look at what you need to organize your very first Popcorn Bar.

Popcorn

First of all, make sure you have at least plain salted, butter and caramel options. The more variety is always the merrier but these are great starting points for guests to add their toppings and spices to.

  1. 1 cup of kernels will make approximately 32 cups of popped popcorn.
  2. A good serving size is 2 cups of popcorn for a guest. (So 1 cup of kernels will yield 16 servings.)
  3. If you have other types of food, consider each guest will have 2 servings. If not, consider 4.

Note: If you prefer to use pre-popped popcorn, consider 1 cup of popcorn weighs on average 1/2oz so you can calculate how many bags you need.

Toppings

Your creativity is the limit here. Don’t be afraid to try different combinations! Here are some ideas:

  • candy, chocolate, crushed cookies, condensed milk, caramel sauce, sprinkles
  • nuts and dried fruit
  • dried herbs like thyme, oregano, herbes de provence
  • spices like paprika, cumin, cinnamon, nutmeg
  • grated hard cheese like parmesan, sharp cheddar, manchego, or crumbled soft cheese like gorgonzola
  • crushed pretzels, Doritos or other chips

Supplies

  • popcorn buckets
  • scoops
  • jars and cups for spices and toppings
  • labels for everything
