Ideas for a Halloween Party for Kids

My daughter was born on Halloween almost 5 years ago. Since then I’ve been anxiously waiting for the right opportunity to throw her a Halloween-themed birthday party. I don’t want to do that every year or she’ll end up hating Halloween when she grows up so it’s important to be strategic when planning her birthdays.

Last year her birthday fell on a Sunday and she was just old enough to actually have fun with the theme. So when I started planning for it I realized it can be tricky to host a toddler-friendly Halloween party. I had to find the right balance between spooky and cute so that kids can enjoy everything and not be scared.

You can check out her birthday by reading this post.

Decorations

There are a few ways you can go about it. Typical Halloween colors are usually black, orange, purple and green. But you can either go with lighter tones of those or even innovate and mix in others. Check out these ideas below.

Another important part of decorating for halloween are the emblematic figures: bats, black cats, witches, ghosts, vampires, monsters, jack o’ lantern…and the list goes on. In this case, just look for light and cute versions of those. I can’t handle this much cuteness…

And finally, it helps to use typical kid’s party decor elements like crazy balloons, colorful straws, banners and garlands.

Shut up and take my money!!
So pretty!
Party City has a wide variety of fun, non-spooky balloons.

Cute and fun.
Friendly ghost garlands.
A black sharpie can do the trick.

Food

Another way to set the tone of a Halloween party is with thematic food and drinks. For adults, you can really crank up on the gore but with kids, the approach needs to be a little different. But that does not mean less fun. Look at these awesome ideas:

Mummy juice box is easy to DIY.
This is genius. Just renaming regular treats with very “appropriate” names.
Any doubts all kids will want to wat a spider like this?
Healthy snacks Halloween version. So cool!
I LOVE cake pops. The end.
This platter is amazing. So much variety and yet the shape is perfection!

Activities

Kids parties need entertainment so let your imagination run wild to come up with Halloween versions of favorite party games or create new ones. Here are some suggestions:

Ghost bowling
Pumpkin decorating
Spider web challenge
Pin the spider
Witch hat toss
Poke a Pumpkin
Color a monster
Feeding Jack
Balloon catching

Favors

Last but not least, party favors! Kids expect something when they go to parties and that is especially true at a Halloween party when they are thirsty for treats. Now, considering they will already get their share of sugar trick or treating, I like the idea of handing out toys better. Check these out:

How fun is this? And super easy to assemble!
Simple, yet guaranteed satisfaction for younger kids.
A little cauldron full of goodies!
OK, this is creative. And useful for after all the sugar.
Such a cute option and the pompoms make a pencil look so much cooler.
The package might be too elegant for kids but how about a slime that smells like pumpkin?
