Baby Shower Planning Basics

I love baby showers because they can be fun and cute at the same time. If you are planning on hosting a baby shower for friends, family members or for yourself, but don’t quite know where to start, don’t worry. I’ve got you. See, I hosted my own baby shower. Apparently, traditionally this is considered inappropriate, but I am not one who cares much about traditions. I had a lot of fun thinking through every little detail of this event that was meant to celebrate the coming arrival of a new (and my favorite) human being into this world.

THEME

Similar to my essential guide to a toddler’s birthday party, you should start by choosing your theme. For baby showers, a few favorites are:

Teddy bear
Woodland Animals
Moon and stars

Animals are always a good source of inspiration for baby showers. Just pick you favorite.

Aren’t penguins the cutest?
Mama to Bee
A little peanut is on the way

Fruits and sweets are also cute themes. Check out these:

Welcome our little pumpkin
Sprinkled with love

But don’t feel like it needs to be cute. You can also adapt themes that you like and that will be fun for adults too.

Beer: a baby is brewing!
Sports: here comes our MVP!
Baby Yoda needs no introduction.

Or, you can chose the minimalist route and have more elegant and sober decorations.

In our case, we chose our daughter’s name very early on in the pregnancy – Marina – so that ended up being a big influence on the theme: the sea. It was nothing fancy, all DIY. But I tried to create a cohesive atmosphere by having sea motifs wherever I could. And a good advice is: use the same theme that will be used for the bedroom. 😉

Once you have your theme and the colors you’ll use, you can look for decorations to match it. There are TONS of stores on Etsy making beautiful and personalized decorations for baby showers. If DIYing is not your thing, I’d start scavenging Etsy for what you like. But remember that personalized stuff always takes longer, so order everything you need about 2 months before the party.

And remember: you don’t have to do butterflies for girls only or sports for boys only. Let’s get over these gender-specific themes and colors, people.

FOOD

Food is usually a big part of parties. And I’m always in favor of making our lives easy and going for practical snacks. But if you can stay within the theme, that’s a big plus. Check out these fun ideas:

ACTIVITIES

Without baby-inspired activities, the baby shower would be just another party. Having some silly games prepared helps guests get to know each other and enjoy themselves even more. And most of them are very easy to DIY. Take a look:

FAVORS

I love party favors and how they are a great way to say thank you for your guests. Plus, they will remind guests, the next day, of the fun they had and help make your party memorable. Sweet treats are the easy choice, but don’t feel like you’re stuck with it. Look at these ideas:

GIFTS

You don’t have to make a baby registry if you’re not comfortable with that idea. Or maybe you already have kids and baby will have tons of second-hand stuff. You can always try saying it in the invitation. However, people feel bad about going to a baby shower and not bringing anything so you might end up with things you don’t need. Here are a few ideas of how you can give them an opportunity to collaborate so that everyone’s feels good at the end of the day:

Diapers are the one thing you will need (unless you’re going with reusable).
This is such a cool idea! Guests can bring their favorite books and leave a special message for baby.
Babylist let’s create customized registries with whatever you need and want, like help vouchers for after baby is born.

And remember that even if you don’t need or want gifts, asking for diapers to donate to those who do need is never a bad idea.

So tell me, are you hosting any baby showers soon? Hopefully this post helped to inspire you. 😉
