14 Unique Kid’s Birthday Themes

If you’re starting to browse the internet looking for a different theme for your next child’s birthday, look no further. I’ve scoured Pinterest and assembled a list of pretty cool birthday themes that go far beyond the basics. Because unique kids deserve unique birthday themes.

If your kid is old enough to decide their own theme, this is can be a great way to come up with the most amazing ideas. My goddaughter, when she was 8, asked her mom for a DJ cat birthday party, and she designed her own cake. Something this unique will probably not be easily found online. But I think I’ve put together a pretty cool list of themes for you to try out:

Garbage Truck

It may not be the most glamorous service provider, but if they went on strike, we’d all miss them dearly. Plus, young kids are usually obsessed with garbage trucks. I have 2, one is 40 years old. 😛

Frida Kahlo

Frida is such a good theme option. Her art and her persona are so colorful and full of meaning for little girls. Plus, there’s the incredible Mexican culture and its icons to use too.

Broadway

If you have a little actor or actress, i’m sure they’d love to celebrate their birthday surrounded by Broadway classics. It can be a good excuse to let your creative juices flow and take advantage of so many great characters and songs. Fun guaranteed!

Book Lovers

To make this even more special, use your kid’s favorite books. And what about this “make your own bookmark” activity table? <3

Doctors and nurses

Ever since I was a kid, being a doctor has been the dream of many little kids. And I would imagine that might even increase after the COVID pandemic and how heroic they have all been. Using a career dream as a theme for an older kid can be super fun and informational too.

Poop Emoji

Among all emojis, the smiling poop has to be my favorite. Is it just me? Now, check out this genius pop emoji themed party! That’s what I call unusual.

Drive-In Movie Night

As a cinephile, this looks dreamy to me. I might even use this theme for my next birthday, we’ll see. So if your little one is a lover of the seventh art, they will LOVE this idea. Just invite some friends, prepare snacks, choose a couple of great movies and the party is ready!

Board Games

Board games are a very common activity to engage guests in parties, but what about using those as the overall theme? Epic, right?

Magic Show

Most kids love magic and there’s so much that can be done with this theme. Cards, rabbits, wands and top hats look amazing on a party decor. But don’t forget to either learn a few magic tricks yourself or to hire a magician to top it all up.

Paper Planes

This is a cute idea if you’re looking for a clean, minimalistic theme option. Plus, super easy to decorate. It’d be fun to look for a few different paper plane templates online though just to add some variation.

The Joker

Villains are hardly the theme of a birthday party so there’s a great pool of untapped potential there. The Joker from Batman might be the most popular one after being so masterfully depicted in films by Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger and Joaquin Phoenix. He’s a psychopath but he’s also charismatic and funny so you can definitely leave the violence part out and focus on the colors, the quotes and the fun.

Frogs (or any other overlooked animal out there)

It’s very common to see birthdays inspired by jungle animals, woodland animals, sea animals, pets, and even cute bugs like the ladybug. But how often do you see frog-themed parties? Or mouse-themed? What about chicken? You get the idea…

Science Lab

Being interested in science is no longer considered weird so if you have a little scientist in the making at home, using that as a theme can be a great idea. There are so many avenues you can explore in the science realm: paleontology, archeology, chemistry…or even better, all of those! Put up activity tables for different fields and the kids will be entertained for hours. Hopefully…

Girl Power

We are living a beautiful era of female emancipation, people. There’s no turning back and I love it. We have more and more books about incredible female pioneers, athletes, artists, leaders. And more films and animations with strong female protagonists. Not to mention those amazing women in the present making things happen and pushing us all to grow. I honestly can’t think of a cooler theme for a girl’s birthday party than this right now.

That’s all for now, folks. Now you tell me: what unusual themes have you tried for your parties?
